Makaton at Willow Park
🧏♂️ Makaton
Purpose:
To support expressive and receptive communication using signs, symbols, and speech.
How it works:
Makaton is used throughout the school day to reinforce spoken language. It is not used as the primary communication tool and is specific to certain children as identified in their Pupil Passports. This is a developing area for learning for both staff and pupils. As we develop our understanding around Makaton and how best to implement it staff are being trained to:
-
Always speak while signing
-
Use clear, consistent signs
-
Embed Makaton in routines, songs, stories, and transitions
Benefits:
-
Supports speech and language development
-
Encourages social interaction and confidence
-
Provides consistency between school and home
